Byrnes_cottage_Umeracam_1960ca
Byrnes_cottage_Umeracam_1960ca
The Byrnes family cottage in about 1960-with obligatory hen. This is the only photo of the Byrnes house during its occupancy; it is where 11 children were born-including the subject of this site, Sarah Byrnes.
Beneath the thatch roof is the kitchen/main room with a small window-hidden in this photo by the porch (facing the oil barrel!) On the right is the main bedroom in front of which a shirt is drying on a bush. The corrugated roof on the left is the barn; a small wooden boxroom is built within the barn with internal door access from the kitchen.
Appears to be taken around the time of of the previous photo with Francis & Sarah Byrnes ("BYRNES, Paddy in doorway")-tin can is still on the windowsill. The text includes: "the porch of the thatched part of the cottage, recently built by family member Georgie Hannaway (1928-2012). Georgie was ably assisted (with much perspiration) by Patsy Hughes, the teenage son of Lizzie Byrnes (1910-1999)". The concrete path was a recent addition but Patsy doesn't remember helping out.
The hidden doorway on the left is the byre with a small extension along the top path - this is the dairy. It was a cool location to store milk which once curdled to buttermilk was churned to make butter.
