1828 Bartholomew Maginnis &Murphy-marr29Nov_NEWRY
1828 Bartholomew Maginnis &Murphy-marr29Nov_NEWRY
The Marriage entry for "Bartholomew Maginnis & Mary Murphy" on 29 Nov 1828 from Newry Cathedral records - a composite of the full page for clarity. Witnesses are: "Ellen Loughran" and "Margaret McKey". Bartholomew's home was in Levelamore townland (1821 census), which later came within Lislea Parish. But in 1828 there was no local RC chapel/church to Levelamore. Bessbrook (Killeavy Lower) Parish records, which would include Lislea, did not start until 1835. Mullaghban/Forkhill Parish records started in 1845. Today's Lislea chapel was consecrated in 1869 and there are some entries for Lislea (including Levelamore parishioners) from 1867 onward. From 1835 Baptisms/Marriages in surrounding chapels (such as in Lislea, Lissumon) were centrally recorded in Bessbrook Parish records until the local chapels came into being.
Since few were literate at this time the names recorded in a Parish were "as heard; in this case by the Newry recorder. So for this Marriage entry; "McKey may have been "McCoy". Was Mary Murphy a Newry parishioner (eg Killeavy) and marrying in the bride's church? Remembering that prior to Bessbrook Parish a Parish Priest covered large areas such as Levelamore/Lislea alone, since assistance from Priests/Curates was not permitted. We also know that neighbours named "Murphy" were neighbours to Bart. Maginnis (McCreish) - 1821 Census (of Forkhill). © Copyright the National Library of Ireland - http://registers.nli.ie/ Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI. [[Local historian Eugene McCann of Ballykeel confirmed this marriage entry relates to Bartholomew McGinnis of Levelamore-inspected copy in 2023.]]
[[Witnesses-Ellen Loughran & Margaret McKey are not names local to Bartholomew's home in Levelamore ("McCoy" is local). Mary's entry "Mary Murphy, Newry" usually identifies the bride's townland or residence. Was Mary from Killevy area and thus close to Newry? There is also some consideration that the McGinnis's in Levelamore are possibly from the Killevy area (Eugene McCann of Ballykeel, local historian).]]

1864-1929_Hannaway &McGees_MapNames
1864 map of Slieve Gullion and of surrounding townlands adjoining the Longfield Road. The five holdings, Nos 2 to 6, each show the tenant's name in 1864 followed by the year that a subsequent tenant took over - up to 1929. In plot 4 Michael McGee was from Denis (Dinny) Mcgee's household (No 5); Michael had married neigbour Catherine Farmer in 1865.
In land plot 2 John Hannaway left home in 1867 and married into Levelamore, inheriting its tenancy in 1886. Back in Slieve Gullion John later took over his parent's land (plot 2) in 1916, following the death of his brother Hughie.
These households were at 850 feet and acess down to the (Longfield) road was mostly through Aughadanove townland. Since most could not read at this time "Aughadanove" was invariably recorded as their home on births/marriages, rather than "Slieve Gullion". 1872 & 1895-Hannaway, Rose & Hugh's tenancy-Sl Gullion
(Enlarge to see details) Griffiths Land Valuation Revision entries for tenancy Ref No2 Slieve Gullion townland. For the 1866-1882 period (upper image): Rose Hanaway/Hannaway takes over the tenancy from "Patrick Hanaway" in 1872/73. This "Patrick Hanaway" has not been traced and may be Peter but recorded as Patrick-they were not literate at the time. We do know that this Rose (Mullen) is the wife of Peter Hannaway in the same household. Thus Peter must have died by 1872. In the 1894-1909 period (lower image) Hugh takes over from his mother Rose Hannaway (née Mullen), the land record entry date is 1895 (see far right column entry "95" - the same colour ink as "Hugh"). Hugh would have taken over following the death of his mother (Rose) in 1894.
