  • Notes
    • Mary Castle, a widower aged 69, is identified as the grandmother of 15 year-old James Castle in the 1901 census. Mary is a Lodging House Keeper at 90 North End, Northallerton. Also living in the house is her son George Castle (age 21) and Gr'daughter Florence A Gadsby (aged 18).
Since Mary would have given birth to George aged 48 the dates are not accurate (it could be a transcriber error seeing/keying "69" instead of "49". If so, when James Castle was born in 1886 Mary Castle would be a grandmother aged 34!). George may not be literate but age 21 is probably close. Mary is more likely to be younger than 69. Old-age State Pension was a decade away so a reason to inflate her age is unclear. [2]
