Picture Note: The Land Purchase Commission 1927, statement from the Belfast Gazette - 30 Sept 1929 (page 8 of 9). These are most of the households in Ummeracam (Johnston) in 1927-1929. The landlord Edward Geoghegan had entered no prior objection thus the lands were taken over by the Land Commission to offer tenants favourable terms to buy their holdings. This was the culmination of the Wyndham Land (Purchase) Act 1903 and virtually all county Armagh tenants took up the offer. Here Rose Hughes (widow) is tenant of holdings No1 & 21. The remaining 12 households in Ummeracam (Johnston) - which included our Francis Byrnes - were tenants of the other landlord: the 3 Gregg sisters and thus not listed here. © Crown copyright – The Belfast Gazette (Open Government Licence)

  • Notes
    • Brian had a sister RoseAnne - see Photo with his wife Lizzie (nee Byrnes).
Brian Hughes died in 1997 and Lizzie in 1999. In 2018 their daughter Marie recounted one of the subsequent events:
In about 2001 Marie's brother Bernard employed a JCB hydraulic digger to remove the old house and the top 2 meters of the rock outcrop. A passing building contractor stopped to observe the hydraulic digger and mentioned to Bernard how he could really do with all that rock for his projects (not knowing it was Bernard's land). The contractor subsequently agreed with Bernard to dig out and extract all the stone he needed for his projects free of charge - reducing the height of the rock outcrop much further. The stones were used in Warrenpoint housing developments and the wall alongside Camlough Lake.
