HANNAWAY John & Mary McGinness 1867 Marriage Record
HANNAWAY John & Mary McGinness 1867 Marriage Record
Picture Note: 1867 Marriage entry for John Hannaway & Mary McGinness (known as Mary "Bartley" after her father Bartholomew or Bartley McGinness) - in Lislea RC chapel, Lislea, Co Armagh. John is a "Labourer" because he is not a tenant of 'House & Land'. This document confirms that Bartholomew McGinnis of Levelamore is the father of Mary McGinnis.
Picture Note: John's father "Peter Hannaway" is recorded as a "Labourer". He is therefore not the Tenant of the Hannaway household in Slieve Gullion townland where he resides with his wife Rose Mullen: the Tenant would be recorded as a "Farmer". But three years earlier, in the 1864 Griffiths Land Valuations, the Tenant was a "Patrick Hanaway". © Crown copyright- https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

Picture Note: In land plot 2 John Hannaway left home in 1867 and married into Levelamore, inheriting its tenancy in 1886. Back in Slieve Gullion John later took over his parent's land (plot 2) in 1916, following the death of his brother Hughie. In plot 4 Michael McGee was from Denis (Dinny) Mcgee's household (No 5); Michael had married neigbour Catherine Farmer in 1865.
Picture Note: These households were at 850 feet and acess down to the (Longfield) road was mostly through Aughadanove townland. Since most could not read at this time "Aughadanove" was invariably recorded as their home on births/marriages, rather than "Slieve Gullion". • Notes

    • "John was son of Peter Hannaway & Rose Mullen (she) of Newtownhamilton. The Hannaway name had not arrived (Slieve Gullion & Levelamore townlands) by the Church Tithes of 1828, but it was there by the time of Griffith's Land Valuations of 1862" (Eugene McCann's records).
Estimates of John’s year of birth:
      • 1838 - from the 1911 census aged 73
      • 1840 - from the 1901 census aged 61
      • 1846 or earlier - from 1867 marriage; “Full-age” (21 or older)
      • 1852 - from 1917 death registration aged 65
Vague dates of birth were common where most citizens could not read/write and civil registration had yet to start; 1864 for births.

1867 Marriage Record bride, groom & witnesses all sign with a X - probably could not write their signature.
1867 marriage record of residence as "Ardanove" is inaccurate: there are no Hanaways in Ardanove/Aughadanove townland at this period. From 1864 Griffiths Land Valuation the Hannaway family home is in the first farmstead in Slieve Gullion townland which adjoins Ardanove/Aughadanove: the next field! To reach the house from the Longfield Road you climb the lane through Ardanove to reach the house on the mountain - you're now in Slieve Gullion townland.
"Griffiths Valuations Revisions: Plot 19B (Hannaways) that went to Mary “Bartley” in 1881, & John Hannaway he got the place in 1889. Went to Patrick Hannaway in 1921, he still had it in 1935 & 1936-57; then it went to George Hannaway in 1965. This property along with John Quinn’s (plot 19A) total of 11.5 acres" (from an audio recording of Eugene McCann in 2016).

"See John Crawley’s bungalow (Levelamore, to the right of Hannaway's) when (John) Quinn died John Hannaway came down to the road when he knew the landlord’s agent was going to Forkhill to probably collect rents... So he asked him could he lease Quinn’s land (strip of fields to the right/south of the lane up to Hannaway’s). John McGlade told me your man (the agent) said ‘Come up and see me when I’m here next’. So he went up and seen him and got the lease on the land-John Hannaway did" (Eugene McCann - audio recorded in 2016). This exchange would have occured on or before 1886 when John Hannaway acquired the tenancy of John Qinn's land-source: Griffiths Land Revisions. John now had the land on both sides of the lane/loanin to his house.
"He (John Hannaway) would go to England for the summer and come back and work on the farm in the winter" (from a 1989 audio of Peter, Georgie & Mary Hannaway [Mary Doherty]).
1901 census states "cannot read". Form B1 of census shows Roof category is 0 (ie thatch). the 4 Outbuildings (form B2):- stable, piggery, cow-house & barn. Only the last two stood since 1950 (Peter Hannaway b1948). Census form was collected 2nd April 1901.
John Hannaway is buried Mullaghban; his wife and children are buried in Lislea (from a 1989 audio of Peter, Georgie & Mary Hannaway [Mary Doherty]). [7]
