  • Name Peter Byrnes
Born Abt 1824  Carrive, Silverbridge, Co Armagh, Ireland Find all individuals with events at this location  [2
    • Currently the best indication of Peter Byrnes/Byrns/Byrnes' birth is from the 1901 census. He enters his age as 77 and signs the page.
Family members state that Peter was born in Carrive (or Carriff) near Silverbrige. There is a Burns family in Carriff during the 1820s, but Burns is not not an uncommon name.
However Edward (Ned) Burns (born c1851) is definitely from Carrive-see marriage certificate. He lived next to Lizzie & Brian Hughes and he is father to Patrick & Petey Burns. Ned married Bridget Burns (no relation to him). Bridget is a niece of Sarah Mackin, Peter Byrnes' daughter-in- law.
Probably only church records could confirm Peter's birth date, parents and locality.
Unfortunatelyr Cullyhanna (Creggan Lower) parish records do not start until 1845. Crossmaglen (Creggan Upper) records start in 1796 but no trace of Peter Burns/Byrnes so far.

    Notes
    • There is no trace of marriage of Peter & Elizabeth in RC & Church of Ireland: counties Armagh, Down, Louth and Monaghan. In February 2011 Source; Frank Byrnes (b1918) at time of funeral of his sister Sarah, confirmed they had not married. He added they were also First Cousins. A dispensation from the Catholic church would be required: first cousin relationship is 4th degree of cosanguinity and contemporary parish records do indicate dispensations were granted.

Elizabeth died 30 Nov 1907. On to 24 January1908 her husband (Peter) died; thus was a "widower" on his Death Certificate

The green arrow splits off the upper half of the land which was lost in 1871. (Silverbridge would be off the bottom of the map). These are the households in Ummeracam (Johnston) who are tenants of the 3 Gregg sisters. Tenants and the landlord sisters have until 31 October 1927 to object before the holdings become "vested in" (compulsory purchase by) the Land Commission. See the 1929 Belfast Gazette announcement confirming completion.

Picture Note: The Land Purchase Commission 1927, statement from the Belfast Gazette - 30 Sept 1929 (page 8 of 9). These are most of the households in Ummeracam (Johnston) in 1927-1929. The landlord Edward Geoghegan had entered no prior objection thus the lands were taken over by the Land Commission to offer tenants favourable terms to buy their holdings. This was the culmination of the Wyndham Land (Purchase) Act 1903 and virtually all county Armagh tenants took up the offer. Here Rose Hughes (widow) is tenant of holdings No1 & 21. The remaining 12 households in Ummeracam (Johnston) - which included our Francis Byrnes - were tenants of the other landlord: the 3 Gregg sisters and thus not listed here. © Crown copyright – The Belfast Gazette (Open Government Licence)

  • Notes
    • 1864-Spelt as "Burns" in Griffiths Valuation of 1864. Land area 19 acres, 3 Rood & 5 Perch. (Location: 54° 6'46.98"N, 6°32'6.33"W)
1871- in Griffiths' Land Valuation Revisions (land tenancy updates) the entry for Peter Byrnes (Ummeracam Johnston Townland, Plot 8, 19 Acres) the update of 1871: the Land & Rent is now divided between Peter Byrnes and Edward Murphy (shortly taken over by Bridget then Catherine Murphy) - Plot 14, in subsequent years entered as Plot 11B. Peter Byrnes has surrendered half of his tenanted land-which includes the lane access from the road to the family house. There is no evidence to show if the Murphy family neighbours in Ummeracam were involved in the loss of half the land or merely independent new tenants.
1901- spelling is "Byrns" in the 1901 Census, appears completed & signed by Peter Byrnes.
1901 census: 1) Peter Byrnes age=77, so DOB is ca 1824. 2) PB & wife speak Irish. 3) Both born Co Armagh.
1907 - Francis' spelling is "Byrnes" on the death registration of his wife Elizabeth/Bessie.
1908-"Byrne" on 1908 Death Certificate (Benedict Martin's copy of 1949 certificate). Age 74 (? so DOB is 1834?). Cause of death: certified Intestinal Obstruction, duration 14 days. Daughter May (Mary) Byrne present at death. Registered in Newtownhamilton 10 February 1908. Buried Mullaghban. Headstone resited for new burials.
1986/1987: Daughter of Nan Martin (née Byrnes) located the grave/headstone of Peter Byrnes, Elizabeth Bellew and son Bernard in Mullaghban cemetery. Many headstones have since been removed for new graves. Some headstones were relocated to the cemetery walls in recent years but the worn engravings are often difficult to read.
Note: For those searching records: search also using "Omericam " or "Emrecam " for Umericam or Ummeracam townland, as entries were recorded as the clerk would interpret unfamiliar words i.e. - as they are pronounced/ as heard. Some older Byrnes members suggest that Peter Byrnes had a brother Francis Byrnes/Burns who lived in Liverpool, had two daughters, one called Jane (noted in the Byrnes Red Book in the 1980s).
    • 1871- in Griffiths' Revisions an entry for Peter Byrnes (Ummeracam Johnston Townland, Plot 8, 19 Acres) - the land & Rent divided between P B and Catherine Murphy (Plot 14, in subsequent years entered as 11B).
