  • Name James McGee  [1
Born 1846  County Down, Ireland Find all individuals with events at this location  [2
    • In the 1901 census James is aged 55 and born in Co Armagh-so born circa1846. (To be verified.) This 1901 census entry appears to be completed by the enumerator-a police constable. Not unusual where tenants could not read.
The 1911 census was not completed in the police constable's (census enumerator) handwriting. Probably by an older son/daughter; but shows James was born in Co Down - as was his brother Michael. The McGee name is more common in Co Down than Armagh but more usually spelt Magee - again not unusual where tenants could not read at the time.
(James' brother Michael was born circa 1838 in Co Down-1901 and 1911 census returns).

Picture Note: 1864 map of Slieve Gullion and of surrounding townlands adjoining the Longfield Road. The five holdings, Nos 2 to 6, each show the tenant's name in 1864 followed by the year that a subsequent tenant took over - up to 1929.
Picture Note: In land plot 2 John Hannaway left home in 1867 and married into Levelamore, inheriting its tenancy in 1886. Back in Slieve Gullion John later took over his parent's land (plot 2) in 1916, following the death of his brother Hughie. In plot 4 Michael McGee was from Denis (Dinny) Mcgee's household (No 5); Michael had married neigbour Catherine Farmer in 1865.
Picture Note: These households were at 850 feet and acess down to the (Longfield) road was mostly through Aughadanove townland. Since most could not read at this time "Aughadanove" was invariably recorded as their home on births/marriages, rather than "Slieve Gullion". • Notes
    • James's 1901 census entry shows he was born in Co Armagh in 1846-the enumerator (local constable) completed the census as James could not read/write. His entry for the 1911 census says he was born in Co Down in 1840 but it was completed by a literate family member - such as son Peter McGee. The 1911 census also records that his brother Michael were also born in Co Down - where it is usually spelt Magee.
Coroboration of the correct James McGee: James is identified as father to Bridget on her 1920 marriage certificate. James' occupation and that he is deceased are also recorded on 1920 marriage certificate of daughter Bridget.
The McGee's (as did the Hannaway's) stated on official records (marriage/births) that they were from Aughdanove townland. However they lived in Slieve Gullion townland on the borders of Aughadanove - through which they would access the road (Longfield Road). Land records also record no McGee/Magee households in Aughadanove 1864-1929. [8]
