Picture Note: James Toal aged 5, his mother Annie Toal (née Malone), grandmother Ellen Toal (née Kelly) and family - 1911 census in Ballard, Co Armagh. Ellen Toal (aged 68) is a widow - since James Toal had died in 1906. The entry in column 10 records Ellen has been married for 34 years. This matches her marriage to James Toal registered in 1876. If we disregard the hand-written deletion, Ellen appears to have lost one of the 4 children she has borne (columns 11 &12). Ellen's son Patrick Toal and Annie (Malone), married 7 years, have also lost one of their 4 children (columns 11 &12) - Patrick born in 1910 died in Feb 1911. © AskAboutIreland and the Cultural Heritage Project; http://www.askaboutireland.ie
