Picture Note: "The 1939 Register" - a page from the national Register: the Hannaway household in Levelamore, County Armagh. The national survey was carried out on 26 Sep 1939-at the outbreak of WW2. The initial records were completed by each household and these were used to issue national identity cards straight away; in 1948 those householder copies were used as the basis for the records of the new NHS service. The census enumerator collected the householders' copy, from which these record pages seen here were created. Patrick Hannaway was Baptised 20 Dec 1876 (here 23 Dec 1876) and he does not use the official Registrar's birth of 8 Jan 1877. This entry page also confirms Annie McParland's birth date (in Chicago) and Mary Hannaway's later married name - Doherty. The 4 blacked-out entries are individuals born less than 100 years ago and Public Record Office N Ireland have no death record. (Bernadette, Maggie-Rose, Georgie and one other). • Notes
    • Patrick Henry Hannaway was born into the McGinnis/McGuinness household of his mother in the townland of Levallymore/Levelamore. His mother, Mary "Bartley" McGinnis, was the daughter of Bartholomew McGinnis. Patrick's father, John, came from the nearby townland of Slieve Gullion.
Patrick was Baptised on 20 Dec 1876 in Lislea chapel. His mother did not register the birth (in Forkhill) until 19 Jan 1877 and the date of birth was recorded by the Registrar as 8 Jan 1877.
Patrick was one of the first in his family and locally to learn to read & write. He served his apprenticeship as a bricklayer and by 1920 was working in Glasgow.
In 1906 Patrick married Annie McParland in her parish at Barr Hill, near Newry. Annie's parents were from Ballard townland (adjoining Levelamore) and had emigrated to Chicago, USA. Annie and two further siblings were born in Chicago before the family returned to Ireland and settled in County Down..
The 1920 photo of Patrick is from "Gale's Studios branches everywhere". Gale's had studios throughout England and Scotland but not in the north of Ireland. We know Patrick lived and worked in Glasgow around this period and his neigbour in Levelamore, Patrick McGinnis, worked and married in Glasgow in 1920: both were bricklayers. Patrick McGinnis kept Patrick's 1920 photo when the former emigrated to New York. Lately his grandchildren inherited this photograph among many other documents without knowing who was the named "Patrick Hannaway" on the photo until now.

USA Immigration Passenger Lists showed that Patrick Hannaway travelled to New York in 1925 (looking for work). His Levelamore neighbour Patsy Collins (b1939) was emailed to verify that he had visited America. Here is Patsy's reply: "Yes, Patrick was in Americia. He was very ill with a stomach complaint when he was there. The doctor told him he had to give up smoking, Patrick said 'I can't do that' he said 'it would be impossible'. The doctor asked 'why not.' Patrick replied 'I never smoked in my life' . Hope you are keeping well. Happy Easter to all . Patsy."
Patrick had boardrd the ss BALTIC in Liverpool which departed 21 Mar 1925 for Cobh, Co Cork. BALTIC departed Cobh 22 Mar 1925 and arrived NY on 1 Apr 1925. The ship's manifest and immigration entries show that Patrick was Joining "nephew P McGinnis.... New York" (the address is faded). Both are bricklayers & appear to have worked together in Glasgow in 1920. Patrick returned from NY on ss BALTIC, arriving in Liverpool on 7 Sep 1925.

Patrick lost his sight in later years after his wife Annie died, he moved to daughter Bernadette's house (Kelly's) in Lathbergat townland.

"Griffiths Land Valuations Revisions: Plot 19B (latterly Hannaway's) that went to Mary 'Bartley' in 1881 & John Hannaway, he got the place in 1889. Went to Patrick Hannaway in 1921, he still had it in 1935 & 1936-57; then it went to George Hannaway in 1965. This property along with John Quinn’s (plot 19A) total of 11.5 acres" (audio recording of Eugene McCann in 2016).
"There was a Right of Way at one time for geese, from Longfield Road up past the north-side of the property to the Black Mountain". Viewed from the road, the Right of Way is on the left-hand side of the field which continues past the left of the Hannaway house and on upwards to the 'Black Mountain'. (The "Black Mountain" area is an area over the top of the mountain visible from Levelamore/Longfield Rd.) This was for summer grazing for geese. (Patsy Collins [b1939] as told by Patrick Hannaway of Levelamore [b1877])".
1901 Ireland census - Patrick (Henry) Hannaway is aged 24.
